Exploring Greenwich CT
Greenwich CT is found in Fairfield County and is the largest town along Connecticut’s Gold Coast. More than 62,000 residents call Greenwich home, with CNN and Money magazine ranking the area 12th amongst the “100 Best Places to Live in the United States.” Several hedge funds and financial service firms are headquartered in Greenwich.
A Brief History of Greenwich, CT
Greenwich CT was established in 1640 between the Asamuck and Patomuch rivers by Elizabeth Fones Winthrop, amongst others. Shortly after, the English and Dutch joined forces against the Native Americans, resulting in a massacre at Petuquapaen. The settlers took more and more land, planting potatoes, grain, and fruit along the way. The Connecticut General Assembly decreed Greenwich a township of Hartford in May 1665.
The Revolutionary War brought major conflict, with many battles being fought in and around Greenwich. Years later, rail travel brought many immigrants to the area. This greatly diversified Greenwich with Irish, Italian, German, and Polish immigrants calling the location home.
New Yorkers also sought refuge in Greenwich, making it a haven for those wishing to escape busy city life. This resulted in hotels and homes being erected to house these part-time residents. After WWII, the town government reorganized, school systems consolidated, and many organizations formed to provide services.
Recent years have seen a renewed interest in preserving the heritage of Greenwich. As such, you’ll find many historic districts, National Register districts, and 280 structures recognized by the Greenwich Historical Society’s Landmarks Program.
